5 Steps To Cure the Back to School Blues

IMGP6444 (2)And so begins another school year!

Does anyone else feel like summer went by way too fast! Maybe it’s because you were having too much fun laying out by the pool and sleeping in all day. Or maybe you had summer school and worked all summer break *cough cough*. Whatever the reason, I know we all feel a drag going back to school. Don’t get me wrong, I love learning! But having to drive to campus, fight for parking, and homework….gag!

I’ve actually been back at school for two weeks now and I’m STILL trying to get adjusted! So today I’m sharing five easy steps I plan on implementing to help me get back in the groove and do good all year:

1. Get Organized

Get a planner, use your iCal, set reminders on your phone or email, do whatever you have to do but make sure you make yourself aware of when you have class, when assignments are due, when test are, and most importantly when you don’t have school because of holidays. 😉 Knowing these dates ahead of time will help you manage you time and schedule so you never miss out on anything important!

2. Prioritize

When your in school, it always seems like you have a million things going on at once. From class, schoolwork, friends, football games, work, sports, etc – you are being pulled in a million directions! Make sure you decide early on in the semester what is most important to you. Once you decide, make sure that is your focus and don’t let anything or anyone get in the way!

3. Set a Routine and Stick To It

Just like a habit, a routine will take some time to set. But it’s totally worth it! Having a routine helps you keep track of what you are doing and when. It also makes it hard for distractions to get in. So make a routine that includes all the important things you decided on in Step 2 and stick to it! And don’t be afraid to change it if you see that your current routine isn’t working out.

4. Get Ahead When You Can

This one is a toughie, I know. You already don’t have enough time as it is. I always see a meme that says “School hasn’t even started and I’m already behind in all my classes”. How accurate is that feeling! Haha. But things don’t have to be that way! The stress you get from doing all your work last minute is not worth it! I am going to try REALLY hard this semester to get ahead as much as possible. If a teacher assigns you an assignment with a week in advance, look at it that evening and start making a plan of action! Not only will your work come out better, but you’ll feel better! Time is not something we can afford to waste.

5. Make Friends/ Join Group Chats

You are not alone in all of this! There is at least 30 other students in your class. Work together to help keep each other accountable. Share/Compare notes, form study groups, share study habits, remind each other of homework due dates and test days! Students at UTSA use GroupMe and I’m not gonna lie, those chats have saved me a couple times before! Maybe you missed a class and the teacher went over important test material or changed a due date. Use your fellow classmates to help keep you updated!

I am not a perfect student, but I do work hard and I want to finish strong! God willing, this should be my last year and I want to make sure I go out with a bang (or at least a good GPA, haha!)

Let me share with y’all why I think these steps are so important:

I’ve been so overwhelmed these past two weeks. I finished summer school early to leave for my trip to Portugal and Spain, came back ten days later and started the fall semester AND went back to work the NEXT DAY (don’t recommend it!). First few days weren’t too bad since it was syllabus days, but man was I tired!

Fast forward to the second week (this week). Classes are starting to pick up, I’m still trying to catch up on all the work that piled up while I was gone, and I’m still living out of my suitcase. I know I have to get organized but I just have no time! I literally wake up at 5:30AM to be at work by 6/6:30AM, work for seven hours, go to school for five, and then come home have dinner and sleep. That’s my schedule, every Monday through Thursday. On top of that I’m working on my blog and other “life” stuff.

Y’all I have been so busy I ignored my gas tank light for THREE DAYS! Yup, you know whats coming…. Thursday after class I was so excited to have a three day weekend I headed home immediately! Only to get stuck on the highway with no gas and no money!

Thankfully I have an amazing boyfriend and the amazing San Antonio Police Department that came to my rescue!

Moral of the story, you don’t have to be so busy that you forget to get gas! If I had just gotten organized, if I had just had a clear head I would have remembered to get gas THREE DAYS AGO! Well I learned my lesson. I will not be letting my gas tank get that low again! Y’all it took three hours to get home (because my battery died out there also!) That’s three hours I could have used to do other things! We can’t afford to waste time because of silly things!

Everyone at work keeps asking me what my plans are for Labor Day weekend and I keep saying “Getting my life together”. And I’m dead serious! I’m gonna use this weekend not to party (because I’ve decided that’s not a priority), but rather to get organized and implement the steps above, because being successful is what’s important to me and I want to make sure I achieve that!

Do you have any other tips for back to school or for getting organized?

XO, Mayra
