With summer temperatures reaching and staying in the triple-digit numbers, one question often arises when considering a visit or move to this vibrant city: “Does it snow in Austin, Texas?”

Whether you’re planning a winter getaway or considering a move to the Lone Star State’s capital, knowing what to expect from the weather can be a game-changer. As someone who’s lived in various Texas cities and seen my fair share of snowflakes, I’m here to give you the lowdown on Austin’s winter climate.

Does it snow in Austin Texas?

Yes, it does snow in Austin, TX! But before you start packing your snow boots and sleds, let me clarify. Snowfall in Austin is a rare but magical occurrence. Yes, it happens, but not enough to go out and get a whole winter wardrobe.

According to data from the National Weather Service, Austin sees an average of about 0.9 inches of snow annually. That’s less than an inch a year!

The winter months are generally mild, with temperatures rarely dipping below 40°F. However, the city did experience a significant snowfall back in January 2021, where some areas were blanketed with up to 6 inches of snow, and many people were left without electricity, my family included!

Climate in Austin, Texas

Austin, Texas, is famous for its sunny weather, which is excellent for people who love spending time outdoors. With an average of 228 sunny days per year, the city is a haven for those who thrive in the great outdoors.

Summers are hot and humid, often reaching temperatures above 90°F, while spring and fall offer more moderate conditions, ideal for hiking, kayaking, or simply enjoying a patio brunch.

Winter in Austin is generally mild, with average high temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s°F. However, winters can be unpredictable, and the weather changes almost daily in Texas. One day, you could be sunbathing out on Zilker Park, and the next, you’re stuck inside your house with 30° temperature.

Yearly Snow Levels in Austin

According to the National Weather Service, Austin averages about 0.9 inches of snow annually. That’s less than an inch a year, making each snowflake a precious commodity!

In the Texas Panhandle, cities like Amarillo and Lubbock see much more snow, averaging around 17.8 and 8.2 inches per year, respectively.

Why the difference? Geography plays a significant role. Northern cities are closer to the cold air masses that sweep down from Canada, making snowfall more frequent and abundant.

Once in a blue moon, Austin can also get a lot of snow. In January 2021, some areas were graced with up to 6 inches of snow! However, these are exceptions rather than the rule. Climate data suggests that Austin’s yearly snow levels have remained relatively consistent over the past few decades.

So, while you shouldn’t expect to build a snowman every Winter in Austin when the snow does come, it’s an event you won’t want to miss!

When does it snow in Austin?

So, when is it most likely to snow in Austin? Your best chance is going to be in January. But keep in mind that snow in Austin could happen at any time, so during Winter, be ready because you never know when Austin’s next snow day will be!

When you think of December, you think of a “White Christmas.” Unfortunately, that is not the case in Austin. While it’s not the most likely month for snow, there have been instances of late December flurries. However, these are often light and short-lived, barely enough to dust the ground.

If you’re placing bets on when Austin will see snow, January is your safest gamble. According to the National Weather Service, this is the month when Austin is most likely to experience snowfall. The city’s most significant recent snow event occurred in January 2021, with some areas receiving up to 6 inches.

February is another month where snow isn’t entirely off the table. While less common than January, February has had its moments, like in 2011 when a winter storm brought snow and ice to the area. However, these events are more sporadic and less predictable.

By the time March rolls around, the chances of snow in Austin become increasingly slim. While I don’t want to say that it’s impossible, snowfall in March is a rarity and usually signifies Winter’s last hurrah before the warmer temperatures set in.

Rainy day in Austin, TX

Freezing Rain and Sleet

So, if not snow, does Austin get any winter weather? Yes, Austin can get freezing rain and sleet. But what are they, what’s the difference between the two, and why should you care?

Freezing rain is rain that falls when surface temperatures are below freezing. Unlike snow or sleet, freezing rain doesn’t freeze until it hits a surface. This creates a layer of ice on roads, sidewalks, and pretty much anything else it touches. The result? A slippery, invisible sheet of ice that can be extremely hazardous.

Sleet, on the other hand, is raindrops that freeze into ice pellets before they hit the ground. These pellets might bounce when they land and generally don’t stick to surfaces like freezing rain does. While sleet can make for slippery conditions, it’s generally easier to see and less hazardous than a sheet of ice formed by freezing rain.

Driving in either freezing rain or sleet is not for the faint of heart. Both can create slippery, treacherous road conditions that significantly increase the risk of accidents.

If you absolutely must drive in these conditions, it’s crucial to be prepared. This means reducing speed, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles, and giving yourself enough time to break. Even with these precautions, the best advice is to avoid driving altogether if you can.

How cold does it get in Austin?

When it comes to winter temperatures, Austin is generally on the milder side. Average high temperatures during the winter months range from the upper 50s to low 60s°F. But don’t let those daytime highs fool you; nighttime lows can dip into the 40s or even the 30s on occasion. While you won’t need a heavy-duty parka, carrying a sweater around during Winter is always good.

How cold does it have to be to snow in Texas?

Now, you might be wondering, “How cold does it have to get for it to snow?” In Texas, and Austin specifically, snow can occur when temperatures are just at or below freezing, which is 32°F.

However, other factors like humidity levels and wind chill can also play a role. So, while it’s not common, snow can and does happen when the conditions align, even if those conditions are relatively mild compared to more northern climates.

What to Pack for Winters in Austin?

Austin winters are truly unpredictable. You’ll experience mild days but also some chilly nights that’ll have you reaching for a cozy sweater. The key to packing for an Austin winter is layers! Think lightweight t-shirts, long-sleeve tops, and a couple of sweaters that you can easily throw on or peel off as the temperature fluctuates.

While you won’t need a heavy-duty parka, a good winter coat is advisable. A water-resistant jacket is a smart choice, as Austin can get some rain during the winter months. Also, pack a scarf, gloves, and a beanie for those colder days and nights. I personally always feel warmer if at least my head and feet are covered.

When it comes to shoes, versatility is the name of the game. A pair of comfortable sneakers is a must for daytime exploring. For evenings or more formal occasions, bring a pair of boots that can handle a light dusting of snow or rain. Thigh-high boots are my favorite. I wore them for Winter in Paris, France, and they helped keep me warm!

And just in case, don’t forget an umbrella and some sunglasses. Yes, sunglasses! Austin gets plenty of sunshine even in Winter, and the glare can be intense, especially if there’s snow. Also, pack a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during your adventures.

Some of my favorite Winter gear include:

Winter Coat

This North Face jacket is not only cute, but will keep you warm all Winter, whether there is snow or not!

Winter Shoes

A staple shoe for all winter long! Wear these classic Ugg boots with leggings, jeans, and even your favorite PJs!

Wear this North Face jacket all year long! It’s cute and comfortable, perfect for rain, sleet, or snow!

What to Do When it Snows in Austin?

When those rare snowflakes start falling from the sky, Austin transforms! Schools often shut down, traffic comes to a near standstill, and residents—both young and old—venture outside to capture the moment.

As someone who’s lived in various parts of Texas and witnessed these snowy rarities, I can vouch for the sense of community and excitement that fills the air. It’s as if the city collectively hits the pause button to marvel at the beauty of nature.
