The best time to visit San Antonio, TX, largely depends on your preferences and what you plan to do during your visit. Generally, the spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) seasons offer pleasant weather with mild temperatures, making it a popular time to explore the city. The springtime brings blooming flowers and is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities. Fall offers comfortable temperatures and lower tourist crowds, allowing for a more relaxed experience.
My favorite time to visit is early winter, during the holidays, when the River Walk is adorned with Christmas lights. It is truly a sight to see! However, San Antonio gets very busy during this time as well.
Deciding how many days in San Antonio is enough depends on what you want to do. While I highly recommend doing everything I mentioned in my things to do list above, I know that list is extensive and cannot be completed in a day.
However, you can do a lot on a weekend, so I recommend spending 2-3 days in San Antonio. This will allow you to see all the most famous landmarks, eat some delicious Tex-Mex food, and give you the urge to come back and see more of what San Antonio has to offer!
San Antonio experiences hot and humid summers, especially from June to August, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F (32°C). If you don’t mind the heat and want to take advantage of water activities or indoor attractions, summer can still be an enjoyable time to visit.
Winter (December to February) in San Antonio is relatively mild, with temperatures ranging from the 40s°F (4-9°C) to the 60s°F (15-20°C). It can occasionally get chilly, but it’s generally a pleasant season for exploring outdoor attractions without the crowds.
In a big city like San Antonio, there are plenty of places to stay. You will find many options based on what area you want to stay in and your budget.
Below are three places I recommend you stay at and how they would fit your travel needs!
If you want to be right in the heart of downtown, with easy access to the River Walk and only 5 minutes from the Alamo, then you will want to stay at the Omni La Mansion del Rio!
This luxury, 4-star hotel is pet friendly, features a tropical courtyard with an outdoor pool, and has an on-site restaurant, Las Canarias.
🏨 Stay right on the River Walk!
If you are not looking to stay downtown and prefer a quieter location, then La Cantera Resort & Spa is the perfect hotel for you!
It is just across the street from the popular shopping center, Shops at La Cantera, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Downtown and the River Walk are only 20 minutes away.
At La Cantera Resort & Spa, you can find four outdoor swimming pools, one being adults-only! There is also an on-site golf course and many spa services to choose from! Supervised play is available for children ages 4 to 12 at the La Cantera Hill Country Resort & Spa Kid’s Club.
🏨 book your stay away from the hustle and bustle of downtown!
If you are looking for a hotel that has it all, then you need to consider the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa.
This hotel has seven restaurants, including a Starbucks and a specialty cocktail bar.
Guests can enjoy tennis courts, fitness centers, a golf course, an on-site water park featuring water slides, and a lazy river. Adults can relax at the spa, which features a private swimming pool. The children’s club features daily activities and child care.
🏨 Fun hotel for the whole family!
San Antonio is a large city with its landmarks and attractions spread out around town.
If you are staying downtown, the best way to get around is by foot. There are so many attractions and things to do downtown that you don’t need to leave the area to have fun!
Uber is also readily available, however, on weekends, holidays, or when big events are in town, Uber’s tend to take longer to get and prices skyrocket! Be ready to pay up or wait for the surge to go down.
In my opinion, the best way to see San Antonio is by car. This will give you the freedom to venture out and do as much as you want whenever you want!
In conclusion, San Antonio, TX, is absolutely worth a visit. From its rich history and cultural heritage to its diverse attractions and vibrant neighborhoods, the city offers every traveler a delightful blend of experiences. Whether you’re exploring iconic landmarks like the Alamo, strolling along the enchanting River Walk, immersing yourself in the local arts and culinary scene, or enjoying the natural beauty of its parks and gardens, San Antonio has something to offer everyone. With its warm Texan hospitality and friendly atmosphere, a trip to San Antonio is sure to leave you with cherished memories and a desire to return.
The short answer is yes. But like any large city, there are areas that you should avoid. Be a responsible traveler and always be aware of your surroundings.
Yes! The San Antonio River Walk is one of the most iconic landmarks in Texas and a must see when visiting! There are shops, restaurants, bars and attractions making this a great place for the whole family.
Like any big city, certain areas of the downtown are not safe. Stay in the tourist areas and don’t venture out late at night.
While a car is not necessary to have a car to enjoy all the landmarks and attractions in San Antonio, I recommend renting a car to make it easier for you to get around and see more of this beautiful city!
The San Antonio International Airport (SAT) is about 8 miles and 12 minutes from downtown. Be sure to allow time for traffic when traveling to and from the airport.
